Should you reply to Google reviews? What a reply tells your next customer

Last updated 22 October 2026 · By Autonova Solutions, Mumbai

Yes. Reply to every review, short and specific.

A woman in Thane scrolls through salons on her phone at night. She reads what the owners wrote back. One page has warm, specific answers. Another has nothing. She notices.

For the wider picture, read why Google reviews matter for a local business in India.

What does a reply tell the next customer?

A reply tells the next customer that a real person runs the business and reads what people write. It says someone is listening before they walk in. It also shows how you talk to people, which a star rating cannot show.

Who reads a reply to a bad review?

The next customer reads a reply to a bad review more closely than the angry customer does. The reviewer may never look again, but someone choosing a salon or garage will read both sides and judge how the owner behaves when something goes wrong.

So write for that stranger. A calm answer shows how you treat people when a visit goes badly. Our guide on how to reply to a bad Google review has fill-in templates you can copy.

What does it cost to stay silent?

Silence tells the next customer that nobody is reading the reviews on the page. An unanswered review sits on your page with nothing from you beside it. Many of them can make a shop look like it has stopped paying attention to its customers.

Example, not a real business: a salon has 20 reviews and 18 have no reply. A new visitor sees two answers and wonders about the rest.

Are replies public, and do I need to verify first?

Replies are public, and you must verify your business before you can write one. Verifying is how Google confirms you may represent the business. After that, each reply you post appears under the customer's review for everyone to read, so write it with care.

Google's help page says, "Before you can reply to reviews, you must verify your business." It also says, "If your reply is approved, it will be publicly posted under the customer’s review."

Updates you share on your page are a different thing, covered in Google Business Profile posts.

What do good replies look like?

Examples with made up names. Each names a detail from the review.

Priya S. · 5 stars · Glow Beauty Salon

My bridal makeup trial was perfect. The stylist listened to exactly what I wanted, and the look stayed fresh all day.

Thank you, Priya. We are so glad the trial matched the look you had in mind. If you want to change anything before the wedding, message us. Congratulations from all of us at Glow Beauty Salon.

Rahul M. · 4 stars · Deccan Auto Care, Pune

Good work on my car and honest advice about what needed fixing. I did have to wait a long time though.

Thank you, Rahul. We are glad the work and the advice felt honest. We are sorry the wait was long for you. Next time, call a day ahead and we will try to keep a slot ready. Deccan Auto Care.

Anita K. · 2 stars · Glow Beauty Salon

The haircut felt rushed and I left unhappy.

Hello Anita, we are sorry your visit did not feel the way it should have. We would like to hear more about it. Please call the salon or write to us, and the owner will speak with you personally. Thank you for telling us.

The third reply does not blame Anita or offer a price cut. It moves the talk to a call.

A weak reply, for comparison

Dev P. · 3 stars · Example

Nice facial, polite staff. But billing took very long and the room felt warm.

Thanks for your review! Visit again!

Why it is weak:

Google's help page says, "Instead of sending the same "thank you" to everyone, focus on reviews where you can share a helpful update or answer a question."

Do I have to reply to 5 star reviews too?

You do not have to, but it is worth doing. A short, specific thank you tells happy customers they were noticed. Keep each one different and mention something the customer actually wrote. A one word review can get a one line answer, and that is fine.

If time runs short, ReviewSaathi can write them for you.

How long should a reply be?

Two to four short sentences is enough. Name one detail from the review, say thank you or sorry, and stop. A long reply to a short review looks odd and heavy. Write the way you would speak across your own counter.

Small questions about replying

How soon should I answer a new review?

A day or two is a sensible aim, because a quick answer shows the owner is paying attention. For an upset customer, wait until you are calm and read your draft twice before you post.

Can I use the same reply on several reviews?

It is better not to. Customers can see all your replies, so repeats are easy to spot. Write each one fresh, and answer what that review actually said, even if it is only one line.

Should I name the customer in my reply?

A first name is fine, since it already shows on the review. Do not add phone numbers, bills or anything else the customer did not post. Keep it about the visit, not the person.
