Why Google reviews matter for a local business in India

Meera lives in Dombivli. Her friend says, “Try Glow Beauty Salon, my cousin goes there.” Meera says thanks. Then, before she calls, she types the salon’s name into Google.
That small moment answers a question many owners ask: do Google reviews matter if customers come by word of mouth? They do. A friend gives your name, and Google gives the proof.
Do Google reviews matter if my customers come by word of mouth?
Yes, Google reviews matter for a business that grows by word of mouth, because a recommended customer may check the business on Google before calling or visiting. The rating and recent reviews are what that person sees first. A friend starts the visit, and your Google page may finish it.
Think of the last time someone recommended a dentist to you. You probably still searched the name. Google’s help page on getting more reviews says this about them: “They show next to your Business Profile in Maps and Search.” So the rating sits beside your name before anyone has spoken to you.
What does a stranger notice on your Google page?
A stranger notices your star rating, your number of reviews, whether anyone replies, and how recently the page was updated. All of this is visible before any phone call. An old update and unanswered reviews can make a good shop look careless.
Here is an example listing. The shop and the numbers are made up.
Example
- The rating. A 4.6 from 533 reviews looks strong. The stranger relaxes.
- The unanswered reviews. With 18 of the last 20 left without a reply, the stranger may wonder if anyone reads them at all.
- The old update. Seven months of silence may make them ask if the salon is still open.
What does a page with no reviews or no replies look like?
A page with no reviews gives a stranger nothing to go on. A page with reviews but no replies can look as if nobody is home. Neither means the business is bad. But a customer choosing in a hurry may simply pick the shop that looks more cared for.
A short, polite reply tells the next reader that a real person answers. We wrote about whether you should reply to every Google review. To see how customers weigh these signs side by side, read how customers choose between shops on Google.
Do Google reviews help my business show up on Google?
They may. Google says reviews are part of how prominent a business is, and that more reviews and positive ratings can help local ranking. But Google decides the ranking, and nothing here is a promise. Distance and how well your profile matches the search count too.
Google’s help page on local ranking says: “More reviews and positive ratings can help your business’s local ranking.” Notice the word “can”. The same page says you cannot pay for a better local ranking. If you want ideas for standing out near a rival, read how to get ahead of the shop next door on Google.
Can I buy reviews or swap them with other shops?
No. Buying reviews, swapping them with other shops, or giving gifts for them breaks Google’s rules, and it is the one shortcut to avoid. Ask happy customers in person, politely, and let them write what they really felt. A few honest reviews are safer than many fake ones.
Google’s help page says offering incentives for reviews “is considered fake & misleading content and is strictly prohibited.” That covers a gift, a favour or anything else given in return.
What to do this week
- Search your own shop on your phone. Look at it like a stranger would. Note the rating, the newest review, the unanswered ones and the last update.
- Reply to the oldest unanswered review today. Keep it short and kind, then work forward to the newest. Never share private details or promise anything.
- Ask your next three happy customers, face to face. Say a Google review would help. Give nothing in return. Then check your opening hours and phone number while you are on the page.
If you have no time for this, that is where ReviewSaathi fits. It writes a reply to every review, and one post a month that you approve first. See the homepage for current status.
Word of mouth and Google: owner questions
Will every customer read my Google reviews before calling?
No, and nobody can say how many will. Some customers call straight away, and some never check. But whenever someone does look, the rating shows next to your name, so it is worth keeping the page tidy.
What if I get an unfair or angry review?
Stay calm. One unhappy review sits next to many happy ones. Reply politely, say sorry for the experience, and offer to talk by phone. Do not argue in public, and do not promise anything in the reply.
Do I need to verify my business before I can reply?
Yes. Google says you must verify your business before you can reply to reviews. Verifying tells Google you are allowed to represent the business. Once that is done, you can answer each review as the business.
